ZimmerClayWorks has launched a series of workshops; titles and descriptions listed below.  Workshops will
initially take place at the
Stonington Community Arts Center (COMO), but will soon be offered at a variety of other locations: Wesleyan Potters (CT), Haystack Mountain School (ME), Penland School of Art (NC), Anderson Ranch (CO), and The Banff Centre (Canada).

Workshop dates:

 Understanding glazes, under-glazes AND over-glazes!

Where: Stonington Community Arts Center (COMO), pottery studio

What to bring (if possible): one or two of your own works, in bisque form

What to expect: a fun and relaxed atmosphere, rich with new information and valuable techniques.  Click here for a full description of the workshop.

Cost: $75 (for current students and Independents at the COMO), $95 for non-members.
          Please note that the cost of the workshop is MUCH REDUCED due to the generosity of the
          COMO and the workshop presenter (Austin Zimmer).

         page.  The user-name and password for access will be provided to workshop
         attendees only (during the workshop or in a follow-up e-mail).

Making the most with what's already in your studio and/or classroom

Additional workshops that are currently under-construction: 

  • A workshop for intermediate and advanced ceramic artists [topics: throwing large forms, resolving bad habits, quicker and more efficient centering techniques, resolving s-cracking and other chronic problems]
     

  • Handmade brushes; learn how to make the best brush you have ever used, YOUR OWN!
     

  • Marketing your artwork; proven strategies for success!  Show application process, creating professional quality images for show submission and MUCH MORE!

Austin (ZimmerClayWorks) has currently developed five workshops.  The first round of workshops will occur at the COMO studio in Stonington, CT.  Austin hopes to then have the opportunity to present at Wesleyan Potters (CT), Haystack Mountain School (ME), Penland School of Art (NC), Anderson Ranch (CO), Banff Centre (Canada), in addition to other professionally ranked programs.  Program directors should contact Austin Zimmer (or call 301-365-8286) for terms, conditions and scheduling options. 

Workshop #1 Understanding glazes, underglazes AND overglazes    (mostly demonstration, but also some hands-on activity / no experience necessary); register online now

-       the workshop will identify the differences between glazes, underglazes  AND overglazes

-       a wide variety of application techniques will be discussed and  demonstrated, including: advanced dipping techniques, layering, slip-trailing, spraying, brushing and the use of the potter's wheel to glaze

-       other topics to be discussed and demonstrated: fixing a glaze that settles too quickly or is too runny, thickening a glaze or slip without adding or subtracting water, fixing a glaze that flakes off before firing, plus a quick an easy way to clean the base of glazed work (with no wax and no more long wiping sessions!)

-       plus, workshop participants will receive a list of (free) resources for technical assistance AND inventive techniques

Workshop #2 -- Silkscreen printing on clay; the possibilities are endless!  (demonstration format / no experience necessary);  register online now

-       the workshop will involve printing on flat and/or three dimensional  forms, such as slabs and wheel-thrown pots

-       workshop participants will receive a list of easy-to-obtain materials in order to screen-print on their own

-       other topics to be discussed and demonstrated are: stenciling, sgraffito and the use of liquid latex and wax 

-       plus, workshop participants will be provided with a list of (free) resources for ongoing inspiration specifically related to printing and mark-making on clay (names, specific web sites, etc.).

Workshop #3 Textured clay; the possibilities are endless!  (mostly demonstration, but also some hands-on activities / no experience necessary);  register online now

-       the workshop will explore the unlimited potential of clay and texture, on and off the wheel

      -   we will also discuss some simple design principles that will help better guide us

-       other topics to be discussed and demonstrated are: creating your own texture stamps, creative use of store-bought stamps and blocks, textured wires, creating smooth and textured slabs (without a slab-roller), working with thicken (raised) slip in order to create even more new texture

-       plus, workshop participants will receive a list of manufactures and suppliers of unique tools and texture-making devises

Workshop #4 Making the most with what's already in your studio and/or classroom (mostly demonstration, but also some hands-on activities / no experience necessary);  register online now

-       the workshop will focus on expanding the working potential of any given studio or classroom

-       workshop participants will discuss, and view demonstrations, on new ways to make use of existing glazes, under-glazes (layering, spraying, etc.) as well as clay already on-site

-       other topics to be discussed  and demonstrated: recycling clay made easy (no machine or back-breaking work required), creating your own texture stamps, care and maintenance issues for kilns and shelves, creating slabs without a slab-roller, creating a mobile damp-box OR dry-box 

-       plus, sources for ongoing (free) technical assistance AND inventive techniques.  Austin will also provide participants will a list of manufactures and supplies of unique tools and services

Workshop #5 Fire and smoke!  Raku + Sagger + Pit + Horse-hair firing (demonstration and lots of hands-on activities / no experience necessary);  register online now

-       the workshop will focus on alternative firing methods, including: raku, sagger, pit and horse hair firing

-       workshop participants will discuss and view demonstrations centered around alternative firing methods AND effective ways to seal and complete finished work (often required if the artists intends is to sell the work)

-       other topics to be discussed  and demonstrated: health and safety precautions, additional firing alternatives (low-fire salt & flame applied patinas)

-       plus, sources for ongoing (free) help AND unlimited ideas.  Austin will provide participants will a list of suppliers of unique tools and services, as well as a list of inspirational artist and instructors (accessible via the web)
